ABOUT UI DESIGNER BRIAN KRAUSEMy twenty years of designing software has exposed me to a uniquely broad range of industries, user interface technologies, and software and hardware platforms. I started my career as a software engineer, but I was always fascinated by user interfaces, and eager to make computers powerful tools for others like they are for me as a programmer. Eventually, that led me to devoting more and more time to the human issues that make an interface and product successful. As I see it, figuring out culture is the key to success for a user interface designer. Every software development organization has a unique culture. I've worked in every size of company, in the United States and Asia. Understanding their culture makes it easy to spark enthusiasm for understanding customers; developers really want to solve real-world problems, but historically have not been given the access to customers or tools for understanding user research. I have had the opportunity to work closely with senior executives, marketing, business development, and sales professionals. A designer also has to quickly figure out the culture of the end users. I've worked with everybody from medical researchers to teenagers to understand their needs, in assignments around the world. I graduated from MIT with a Computer Science degree in 1990, but I started consulting even before then, mainly on programming assignments. In the early '90s I worked on software for medical research, computer based training, the financial industry, and assistive communications devices. In 1995, I moved to Silicon Valley, worked for an educational software company, and was the third employee at Interwoven. Adducive was founded in 1998 and I did a lot of work in over-the-phone speech recognition, which was new at the time. My consulting turned more exclusively toward user interface design and analysis. I had the opportunity to work in Singapore, helping Encentuate, a security start-up, and later as a researcher, analyzing the media sharing behavior of young people, especially how they use their mobile phones to take and share digital photos. Prior to that, I worked in the banking industry as the lead designer for consumer web-based online bill pay, with a special emphasis on security. My clients over the years include start-ups, multinational corporations and the public sector. I have extensive experience with web-based and desktop application design and usability testing. My engineering background makes it easy for me to create compelling prototypes quickly and to work effectively with technical teams in complex product domains.
