QUESTIONS FROM USER INTERFACE INTERNSHIP SEEKERSI am not hiring, but I still get inquiries once in a while, and I am happy to answer your questions about user interface design as a profession. Here are some answers I thought were worth sharing with other prospective interns. Q. I'm having a hard time finding a position, since there are lots of IT specialists looking for jobs. Most of the time, I don't get any answers. A. Having been in business for a while, I can tell you that companies get better manners toward job seekers as the job market improves. Unfortunately, many people are only as nice as they have to be. I try to respond to anybody who has bothered to address me by name and gets my company name correct. Have you tried academic employers in non-design disciplines? They are somewhat insulated from economic conditions, and have time during the summer to spend on special projects. I worked at a medical school while I was a student, writing programs for medical research. You won't have more senior designers to help you out, but you would be able to define the problems yourself and get results. If you have friends in the sciences or engineering, their labs may need some help with custom software. Also, there are generally no issues with intellectual property, so you can show your work to prospective employers down the road.
